Don't Discount What Matters Most - Connection

Black Friday reminds us how easily value can be reduced to a price tag. But some things cannot be marked down, and connection is one of them.

Every year, Black Friday arrives with its familiar fanfare, discounts, deadlines, and the urgent suggestion that everything has a price and that price can always be lowered. It is a useful reminder, in its own way. Not of what to buy, but of what cannot be bought at all.

We are created for connection. In work, in families, in friendships, connection is what enables us to thrive. It grounds us, strengthens us, and gives meaning to the effort we pour into our days. When it is healthy and strong, it becomes the foundation from which we can withstand almost anything.

When connection fractures

When a relationship fractures, personal or professional, the impact can be quietly devastating. Not because we are weak, but because we are wired for belonging. Losing connection shakes foundations we did not even realise we were relying on until they shifted beneath us.

In a professional context, fractured relationships play out in disputes, deteriorating partnerships, and collections matters where what began as a business arrangement has become a source of real pain on both sides. The financial cost is visible. The relational cost, the loss of trust, goodwill, and the possibility of future collaboration, is harder to quantify but often far greater.

Three things worth remembering

Don’t discount the value of genuine connection. The relationships that carry you, in business and in life, are worth protecting long before they are at risk.

Don’t discount your worth when relationships strain. Difficulty in a relationship does not diminish your value, or theirs.

Don’t assume broken connection can’t be repaired. It often can, with the right process, the right approach, and the willingness to try.

The wiser investment

When connection breaks, the cost is always higher than the discount ever was. Preserving and restoring it, through honest conversation, mediation, or simply the decision to engage with care rather than conflict, is almost always the wiser investment.

May we honour what strengthens us, restore what is repairable, and never underestimate the quiet, steady power of true connection.

Is a fractured relationship worth repairing? We help individuals and businesses restore connection through mediation, negotiation, and human-first dispute resolution.
